Mink

It's that time of year again when seeing mink out and about, as they hunt prey for their young, that give us glances at them we don't usually have. Taken at Irondequoit Bay.

Morning at the Cove

It was a peaceful morning at Dean's Cove and the sun was trying to shine. The only sound was the honking of geese, mostly Canadian geese but a few Snow geese had joined them.

Saw What?

This barely visible northern saw-whet owl was a hoot to find peeking out at me. I was quite a distance away, and found it whimsical I was being spied on!

Red-tailed Hawk

Red-tailed Hawk

The Oneidas, one of the six nations that make up the Iroquois (Haudenosaunee) Confederacy, have studied hawk and eagle hunting technique. When a hawk sees a mouse, he dives directly for it, as opposed to an eagle, who sees the whole pattern and detects movement within it. Also, a bit of research revealed that, particularly among Native American traditions, the Red-tailed Hawk is seen as a strong symbol of visionaries and spiritual messengers. Because the hawk is able to soar high above the earth, as if it were flying into the heavens, it has a perspective of the "bigger picture," which we cannot experience with our "feet on the ground."
